Top-down spatial equations and demographic algorithms look flawless on paper, but they are often blind to living human behavior, the local trust networks, informal transit preferences, and social infrastructure that dictate how people actually use space.

My work pairs spatial lag modeling and GIS analysis with immersive ethnographic fieldwork. By capturing ground-level human voices and real-world friction before capital is allocated, I help urban leaders, developers, and platform operators calibrate their models, eliminate blind spots, and deploy with complete precision.

Jacob Frye is an urban consultant and spatial econometrician specializing in pre-deployment strategy, spatial analytics, and ground-level ethnographic fieldwork. He founded Frye Urban Capital Advisors LLC to eliminate the critical blind spot between top-down quantitative models and living human behavior. By combining advanced spatial econometrics, such as spatial lag and spatial error modeling in R alongside network and catchment GIS analysis, with immersive qualitative research, Jacob helps institutional investors, platform operators, and urban planners de-risk major initiatives and calibrate their models before capital hits the ground.
His research footprint spans domestic US markets and Chinese Tier 1–3 urban centers, backed by extensive fieldwork across Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Foshan examining informal mobility, transit friction, and localized market dynamics. Fluent in professional Mandarin (HSK 5 certified), Jacob utilizes multi-sited field design, go-along interviews, and participant observation to surface the street-level trust networks and cultural nuances that pure algorithmic forecasting misses. Beyond corporate advisory, his work on social geography is deeply informed by his archival work at The Belonging Archive, where he curates and analyzes spatial stories of place, identity, and urban displacement.
Jacob regularly presents his integrated methodology at premier conferences, including the American Association of Geographers (AAG), the Urban Affairs Association (UAA), the Society for Applied Anthropology (SfAA), and the Regional Studies Association (RSA).
When he isn't modeling spatial data or conducting field observation, Jacob can usually be found eating Pho with friends, spending hours in Muji, spending time with family , and accompanied by his cat, Chubbs.
